        History Of Novel

The eighteenth century has gifted English literature two new forms . One was   'The Periodical Essay' and the other was 'NOVEL'.

  A novel is a relatively long narrative fiction. It describes human experience in a prose form. Novel narrates a story and creates a picture of the society of that time.It makes life easier to understand than in drama and poetry.

   Murasaki Shikibu's  '  Tale of Genji '  has been described as the world's first novel.

'Rajmohan's Wife ', by Bankimchandra chattopadhyaya was the first novel in English written by an Indian.

    Novelist like Charles Dickens, Walter Scott,Hawthorne,Walpole, Thomas Hardy, H.G Wells, E.M Forster, George Orwell, D.H.Lawrence have elevated the tradition to prosperity.

i)  Style of the Novel -

        The language and the techniques used by the author for narration is known as  the ' style '.

ii)  Stream of consciousness novel -

             Stream of consciousness is a phrase.It means the flow of thoughts. It is coined by William James in his treatise ' Principles of Psychology .' Incidents in the story are in the sequence.

iii) Novella -

                  Novella is a type of prose fiction.It is a well - structured short narrative. It is shorter than a full length novel and longer than short stories. Its tone is often satiric or realistic.

iv) Indian tradition of novels-

                     Bankimchandra chattopadhyaya was the first Indian novelist in English.He wrote ' 'Rajmohan's Wife's. After that, Mulkraj Anand ,R.K.Narayan and Raja Rao dominated the era. Novelist like Anita Desai, Nayan tara Sahgal ,Arun Joshi ,and Manohar Malgaonkar as well as Amitabh Ghosh, Vikram Seth, and Upamanyu Chatterjee contributed and added some new features to it.

Novelist like Salman Rushdie, Arvind Adiga ,Arundhati Roy, Kiran Desai and Kiran Nagarkar continued the Indian tradition in the field of novel with the dazzling performance.It is true that Indian novel has a very bright future.

              Types of Novel

1) Realistic Novel ----

    It is a fiction. It gives the effect of      realism.

2) Picaresque Novel ---

     It narrates the adventures of the       protagonist in an episodic form.

3) Historical Novel ---

     A historical novel is based on             the    historical elements.

4) Epistolary novel ----

     The Novel is presented in the             form of

      a series of letters or diary                  entries.

5) Gothic Novel ---

     The Novel that include terror,           mystery, horror, thriller, doom,          death , decay or haunted                    buildings

      are called Gothic Novel.

6) Autobiographical Novel -----

     It is based on the life of the                 author.It may or may not be

     in the first  person .

7) Allegorical Novel ---

     A story bears more than one 

     meaning. The surface meaning is

     different than the symbolic                meaning.It may be political,

      religious, historical or                            philosophical.

8) Utopian /Dystopian  Novel ---

    Utopia is an imaginary society.

    It possesses ideal qualities.

9) Psychological Novel ---

     It handles the internal as well as

     external life of the characters.

10) Stream of consciousness novel-

                  It is a phrase. It means 

      the flow of thoughts.

11) Bildungsroman ' Novel ---

      It indicates growth.It is            ..          concerned with the growth

      of the protagonist's mind from          their childhood to adulthood.
