Homonyms :-----------------------
Homonyms are two words, that are spelled the same and sound the same but differ in meaning.
The word ' Homonym ' comes from the prefix 'homo' -- which means the same,and the suffix '--nym' which means name.
Therefore, a Homonym is a word that is pronounced and spelled same but differ in meaning.
Now let's see what is 'Homophone' means --
Homophones are words that are pronounced the same but spelled differently and differ in meaning.
Where as Homographs are differ from Homonyms and Homophones,
Homographs are words that are spelled the same but are not pronounced the same.they are differ in meaning.
Let's see the examples of each :
1) The word, " Address "
is a perfect example of Homonym. It is because it pronounced and spelled the same but differ in meaning
The word " address ", has two meanings . One is 'to speak to ' , and another is ' location '
Similarly the word "kind " has two meanings one is ' type' and another is 'careful ' or caring.
The example of Homophone :-
Words "hear" and "here" , both pronounced the same but spelled differently and also differ in meaning.
"hear" means 'to receive sound ',and "here" means 'in the particular location or place '.
Example of Homographs :-
The word " lead " and "lead"
Both words are spelled the same but pronounced differently and differ in meaning
First word "lead " means graphite, and second word "lead" means to take initiatives or guide.
Conclusion : By considering the differences between the words themselves----nym, phone and graph--- it is easier to grasp and remember their definitions.
